"We must use time wisely and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right." Nelson Mandela

In the United Kingdom, Mashinga works with Black Minority Ethnic (BME) groups in the county of Norfolk, particularly in areas in and around the city of Norwich. Its target groups are black youths and emerging BME families.

Mashinga is a Shona word which means perseverance. It was chosen in memory of a young boy known by the same name. Mashinga was an orphan and he lived with HIV from birth till he died of the disease early this year. His endurance and determination in the face of adversity embodies the resiliency and fighting spirit of many children and young people who share his experience.

Mashinga Trust operates both in Zimbabwe and in the United Kingdom. The Zimbabwe project will be based in Harare. The city of Harare is Zimbabwe’s largest city with an estimated population of about 1.6 million. The Harare project covers low income areas of Glen Norah, Highfield and Glen-View with an average population of about 150 000 people. Work will be scaled out to other places depending on the availability of resources. This project targets orphans and vulnerable children. In 2008 UNICEF, WHO and UNAIDS estimated that Zimbabwe had around 1.2 million children living with HIV and about 1 million others had lost one or both parents.
